Warrior Care Month

When you think of care for wounded warriors, the Department of Veterans Affairs is likely the first thing to come to mind. However, more goes into the warrior care than what’s done through the VA. For example, the Department of Defense plays a significant role in the funding and treatment of wounded veterans.
Before Warrior Care Month was established, many wounded warriors received substandard care, often due to a lack of awareness or challenges accessing available resources. The response to this was the establishment of Warrior Care Month to improve the quality of care for our wounded veterans and service members.
A Glimpse Into the History of Warrior Care Month
Warrior Care Month takes place in November and was established in 2008. Since then, this month has aimed to increase awareness of the resilience and strength of our injured or ill service members. Warrior Care Month also aims to acknowledge military caregivers for their commitment and devotion.
The DOD is constantly re-evaluating the funding, awareness, and treatment options available to meet the needs of our wounded warriors. November is full of events, publications, and awareness campaigns that give sick or injured service members a voice to advocate for their care.
How Has Warrior Care Month Helped So Far?
Since its establishment in 2008, Warrior Care Month has done a lot to improve treatment and care quality for our wounded warriors. On top of raising awareness, Warrior Care Month has led to the creation of numerous helpful programs for sick or injured service members.
During the announcement of Warrior Care Month, many programs were created to address the needs of our sick and injured troops. Each branch has also created their own programs to provide better care to their wounded warriors. Reach out to your specific branch’s Wounded Warrior programs to access services or to learn more about events or program details:
●Marine Corps Wounded Warrior Regiment
●U.S. Special Operations Command Warrior Care Program
Through these programs, you can find various services and resources that address issues unique to wounded warriors, including transportation, childcare, education, respite care, and more.
How You Can Support Warrior Care Month
If you want to support Warrior Care Month, it can be as simple as getting involved in events near your local base. Many Wounded Warrior Projects have their own events for specific branches or groups, which can range from Q&A meetings, tournaments, vendor fairs, and other social events. Check with your local base and programs to see what’s going on during Warrior Care Month.
You can also participate in the signature events hosted by DOD Warrior Care. These events aim to reach out to the community in hopes of raising awareness and encouraging donations to different Wounded Warrior programs. The official DOD Warrior Care website also offers plenty of resources to learn more about the service members who sustained service-related illnesses or injuries.
